Dave asks, via Email:
When I click the left hand button on the mouse I used to get a click sound, now I'm getting a musical note sound, how can I change it back to the click sound?
Well, after a bit of looking around and I discovered that there are programs for making mouse clicks play sounds (Soundy Mouse is one). If it is happening all the time, with all programs and you (or someone who has access to your PC) have installed one of these then have a look at the documentation / help file in that prog for more information.
If you mean that, when clicking links in your web browser, it plays a note now and it used to just click then you will probably need to change a setting in Windows. (The various sounds that Windows uses can get changed if you change your Desktop Theme, Sound Scheme etc., however if you like the theme but want to use the original sound then this can be done).
I have Windows 98SE and Windows XP, and now, Windows Vista here so I'll show the method for altering the sound on these, other versions of Windows will be similar to these methods (Windows 95 and 98 are, basically, the same as 98SE).
Windows 98SE:

- Click on the Start button.
- Select Settings
- Select Control Panel.
- Select Sounds, you will get something similar to the picture.
- Using the scroll buttons or slider (ringed in green) find Windows Explorer then locate and click on the Start Navigation text.
- Click on the play button (ringed in blue) and, if this is the sound you are now getting, we're nearly done (if this is not the sound you are now getting then this may not solve your problem!).
- Use the drop down arrow (ringed in brown) and locate Start.wav (as shown in the picture).
- Check by clicking the play button and, if this is the sound you wanted. If it is not, or you want a different sound, work your way down the list until you find one you want, using the play button (ringed in blue) to hear the sound.
- Click OK. The sound should now be set to a click (the default on mine was not set ((None)).
- If you couldn't find the Start.wav file then click on Browse and locate the Media folder, it should be in there.
Windows XP:
Windows Vista:

- Click on the Start button.
- Select Control Panel from the menu.
- Select Sound, you will get something similar to the top picture (shortened for clarity).
- Click on the Sounds tab (ringed in red).
- You will get similar to what is displayed in the second picture.

- Using the scroll buttons or slider (ringed in green) find Windows Explorer then locate and click on the Start Navigation text.
- Click on the Test button (ringed in blue) and, if this is the sound you are now getting, we're nearly done (if this is not the sound you are now getting then this may not solve your problem!).
- Use the drop down arrow (ringed in brown) and locate Windows Navagation Start.wav (as shown in the picture), this is the default sound for Start Navagation.
- Check by clicking the play button to see if this is the sound you wanted. If it is not, or you want a different sound, work your way down the list until you find one you want, using the Test button (ringed in blue) to hear the sound.
- Click OK. The sound should now be reset.
- If you couldn't find the Windows Navigation Start.wav file then click on Browse and locate the Media folder, it should be in there.

I hope that this has answered the question, if anyone can add the methods for other versions (ME, 2000 etc.), please email me (screen shots would be good as well, if you're not sure on how to do a screen shot (no, not with a camera!) then see the How to copy the screen to an image page.
This page was sent to Dave (in draft form, I've altered it a bit since but the basic info is the same) the day that I received his question. I received this reply within 12hrs:
… Thanks for the reply regarding the click vs the musical note, followed your instruction and the mouse is clicking again…
Glad to be of service, any more questions anyone?
