Free Software for your PC!
By Robin, 2W0LAZ.

Now that I have your attention, let me explain. These reviews will make you familiar with the world of free software. Not cheap, but totally free.

The word "cheap" is often applied to something of lesser quality, so how can free software be any different, you may ask? Some software companies offer free versions of their software for you to try out. Their hope is that you will get to like their program and wish to purchase a more fully featured version from them. However, if the free version offers everything you need then you are usually free to continue to use it without any commitment.

A different type of free software is known as freeware. This is where the software author may write a program, retain the copyright but then release it to the internet for anyone to download and use for free. There is often a restriction that a program is free for personal use but a fee must be paid for commercial use. This suits us as end-users fine.

Sometimes a freeware program is so good it enthuses an online community of programmers to add extra features and make improvements as a team, all working online, sharing techniques and ideas to create truly amazing software. Often these programming communities produce software that is far in advance of what is available commercially and even applies to whole operating systems for computers.

In the following articles I have tried to give an overview of each piece of software, highlighting its unique features and capabilities. The first group of programs all have something special, something that is missing from Windows, sometimes they offer something useful that you didn't know you needed until you try it. When you have used software like this for a while you wonder why Microsoft didn't include it with Windows in the first place.

You have nothing to worry about with these programs, they are all guaranteed by their suppliers to be free from viruses and spyware. I personally have all 10 of these applications installed on my PC and make everyday use of them.

Read the articles, view the screenshots, and follow the links to the websites to read more and download the software. You have nothing to lose, nothing to pay, and if the software is not for you, simply uninstall it and try something else.
